In the prehistoric times, herbs have been used by people to treat disease which have been found in tombs and burials. While some herbs have been used for health benefits, other herbs were used for rituals or spiritual reasons. The belief that the appearance of a plant revealed its possible use as a medicine was known as the doctrine of signatures.
I think I believe in the doctrine of signatures because my husband can recognize if a plant has medicinal benefits. He used to be with an old man (that old man already passed away) to find medicinal plants in the forest. This old man, though not really academically educated but knowledgeable in traditional medicine, taught him about the characteristics of plants and what type of sickness that certain plant can cure.
Sometimes I am a bit skeptic if he brings home some plants or roots of plants from the forest but his friends believe in what he's doing. His friends who came to him that have health problems get healed after taking the herbs he gave them. Maybe there are certain people who are enlightened to recognize the characteristics of plants for the purpose of helping those who have health problems. My husband used to tell me that if one rare medicinal plant grows in one area, it means that somebody has an ailment nearby that needs that certain plant. It sounds strange, but with God there is nothing impossible. After all everything in this Universe is God's Creation.
My understanding from what I learned in selling supplements is, our body needs minerals to support our tissues or cells. We need these plants to supply us with the minerals that our body needs because plants absorb the minerals of the earth.
Some herbs how ever are extremely poisonous unless carefully prepared. And some herbs have to be mixed with other herbs to make the herbs more powerful. That's how I see my husband do it. I suffered from gastric ulcer when I was only 14 years old. I ingested few kinds of conventional medicine but it never healed. Sometimes I couldn't stand straight because of pain, empty or not empty stomach the pain was still there. Until I met my husband at the age of 29. He asked me to boil some roots of plants. At first I was reluctant to do so, but since I can no longer endure the pain, I boiled the roots. Being a bit skeptic at that time, I did not finish one mug of the boiled herbs. Although he asked me to do it for one week, I did not follow. I was surprised that after how many years of pain, immediately I was healed and never have that pain again until now.
This is the power of plants...Beautiful Nature.
