Lupus Erythematosus

Lupus Erythematosus is a disease that is often characterized by scaly red patches on the skin. The disease exists in two forms. The discoid, or mild, type manifests itself as round or butterfly-shaped lesions on the face. Usually no treatment is necessary, but the individual should avoid sun's rays.

The systemic, or more serious, type affects the connective tissue. It may involve the joints, lungs, heart, kidneys, nervous system, or skin. Symptoms include pain in the joints, muscles, and abdomen. Cortisone and related medications are used to control the disease.

Lupus Vulgaris is a tuberculosis of the skin. In lupus vulgaris, brownish lesions or modules may form on the face or mucous membranes, the lesions then become ulcerous and form scars. There may be a tuberculous infection elsewhere in the body, which must be identified and treated. (ref: Benjamin F. Miller, M.D. Family Health Guide and Medical Encyclopedia)
