What is Calcium?

Calcium is a chemical element whose presence in the body is essential for the maintenance of good health. The combination of calcium and phosphorus produces calcium phosphate, the substance that, together with carbonate, makes up most of the mineral part of bones and teeth.

If sufficient calcium is lacking in the body, such diseases as rickets, and osteomalacia may occur. Foods that are high in calcium include whole milk and skim milk, many cheeses, brocolli, cabbage, molasses, and watercress.
