Kerosene Lamp |
We all know that there are two kinds of darkness. Darkness because of separation between night and day and darkness which pertains to the dark force. I don't know much about the other darkness, with the little knowledge that I have, I'd rather not talk about it.
Confucius taught us not to curse darkness, and really we should not. God created darkness, or we call it night, for us to make use of it as a time to rest. At sunset, we can see the slowly changing of the light of day into night or evening.
In the late 19th and early 20th century, when modern technology was not really developed yet, electricity were not connected in far away provinces from the city. People who were living in those areas witnessed entirely the approached darkness after the setting of sun. I am one of those witness because I grew up in the province before I lived in the city. The only lights that we have at night time are kerosene lamps. It was a humble life, no television, no computers and no devices using technology. Humble as it was, the memory of being very close to nature is not hard to erase from my mind. At about 6:30 p.m. we already finished our dinner, and at 9:00 p.m. we were already fast asleep. As we woke up in the morning, we were full of vigor to do things for the day because we had a very good night sleep that our body had a complete rest.
The advancement of modern technology changed the world. The coming of darkness to separate the day is hardly noticed. Everybody is busy, either working until late at night and even extended until dawn before the sun rises the following day, or busy watching television, or busy with gadgets especially in social websites, etc. Gone were the days that family members were close to each other especially during the night after dinner and before going to bed. Gone were the days when children sit beside their parents and eager to hear stories, the kerosene lamp in the middle while sitting on the floor, which makes family members more closer to each other. Now, in this generation, where children have their own gadgets, even 2 years old already knows how to operate gadgets, the close family relationship that had been practiced in the past generations are seldom or never observed anymore.
Confucius was really a wise man in his time who had a great wisdom and foresight. Darkness created by God should not be cursed because it is better to light a small candle or a kerosene lamp that is just enough to produce a dimming light which continue to produce light in the household while everybody is sleeping, rather than to stay in the "darkness" of our lives because we had already forgotten ourselves that there is a time to work and there is a time to rest. I say the darkness of our lives, because too much abuse of our physical body will be the darkness part of us if we get sick. The darkness of the night is meant to be created by God, for man to know that everybody should take a break when it is time to have a break.
The darkness of the night is a reminder for man to give respect to the needs of their physical body system and to follow God's given time to rest. If a machine needs a break so as not to overheat...how much more with our physical body?
